Die ITU hat sich in den letzten Jahren verstärkt mit den Themen Mobilfunktechnik und -dienste, Satellitenübertragung,
hochauflösendes Fernsehen, Multimediatechnik sowie
Datenkompression befasst und 1992/93 eine neue Organisationsstruktur eingeführt, wobei folgende Organe neu gebildet wurden: Sektor für
Standardisierung im
Fernmeldewesen (Secteur de la normalisation des télécommunications beziehungsweise Telecommunication Standardization Sector, ITU-T), Sektor für das Funkwesen (Secteur des radiocommunications beziehungsweise Radiocummunication Sector, ITU-R) und Sektor für die Entwicklung des Fernmeldewesens (Secteur du développement des télécommunications beziehungsweise Telecommunication Development Sector, ITU-D). Die erste Weltentwicklungskonferenz von ITU-D, die 1994 in
Buenos Aires stattfand, beschloss einen Aktionsplan zur Unterstützung der
Entwicklungsländer.
